Psychology of Color and Personality

The study of color has been a common interest throughout history. What we’re talking about is a natural factor that is fascinating as well as an enigmatic one, that never ceases to surprise and has yet to be completely deciphered by science, specially in the process of the perception of color. Likewise, the broad branches of studies that have faced this subject have not been just a few, as well as the attributes (scientific and non scientific) that have been assigned to a specific color.

In this first part of the series, the primary colors and grayscale have been addressed. Each photograph is composed of a portrait from a classmate or friend that I admire as persons and as an artist. In their respective captions, their names appear enclosed by their Instagram username if curious about what they do.

The effect of this color is so peculiar as its nature. An impression of seriousness and dignity is transmitted, and at the same time of grace and appeal. The first of its dark and deep state, the last in the dim light.

It is the closest to the light color. At its highest purity that always carries the nature of brightness, it has a soft character, exciting serene. On the other hand it is very susceptible to pollution.

You could say that blue has a principle of darkness in him. This color has a peculiar effect and almost indescribable in the eye. At its highest purity it is, so to speak, a stimulating negation. His appearance is thus a kind of contradiction between excitement and repose.

It is the sum or synthesis of all colors and the symbol of the absolute, unity and innocence. It is the one that has greater sensitivity to light and means peace or surrender in some cultures. Mixed with any color, it reduces its chroma or color and change their psychic powers. The white is always positive and affirmative. It is, par excellence, the color of good feelings. White creates a luminous impression of emptiness, positive and infinite purity.

It is the product of the mixture of black and white. It symbolizes neutrality, indecision and lack of energy. Many times, also expresses sadness, doubt and melancholy. It is also a fusion of joys and sorrows, of good and evil. It seems cold metal, but also sense of brilliance, luxury and elegance.

One could say it is the total absence of light. When a body absorbs all colors of the spectrum and reflects none the black occurs. In some cultures it has more negative connotations than positive. It is a symbol of error, evil, mystery and death. However, it also refers to the nobility, sophistication and elegance.
